Should I Move Myself? Here Are Things To Consider!

There are several questions you get to ask and answer when planning a move, and one of the major ones is whether you should move yourself or hire professional movers. The answer to this question, just like any other, is dependent of several things. But before going on to these considerations, here is an overview of these options, so you understand what they entail.

We hate unpacking!
We hate unpacking!

Moving yourself always seems to be the cheaper option, but you must understand all the things that come with it. You have to do the shopping of supplies; packing, loading, unloading and unpacking of all your properties; hiring a truck; and driving the truck for the number of days it takes. Let’s not forget gas, hotel lodging, and one-way fee (for returning truck to a different location). Also remember you have to deal with issues that may arise with the vehicle during the move.

Hiring professional movers

This is the most-feared option, but quite the easiest. It only requires that you do proper research in finding a reliable moving company. If you are in the right hands, you really have nothing to worry about, and all the stress is taken off you. Just make sure all the details are taken care of: get the estimates written out, the order of service and bill of lading signed, then sit back and watch them do all the work.

Somewhere in-between, there is a hybrid of the two, which is the one that is mostly gone after. It involves you doing part of the work to save you some bucks. Mostly, you take care of packing the properties, while the company only comes to move them to the new place.

So, here you go on what should help you decide:

  • How much stuff will you be moving?DIY is easier when you have very little properties. But the more things there are to be moved, the more work there is to do packing, loading, unloading, and unpacking. In some cases, it may take more than one truck to move all the things, and you wouldn’t want to go through the journey twice. Here’s a tool to help you calculate how many trucks you will be needing.

  • How far will you be moving? The father the move, the more complex it becomes for you to DIY. This is because you will need more of everything like gas and lodging, plus higher truck rental fee (especially for one way). There are distance and fuel calculators that can help you estimate distance you will be covering and how much you will need for gas.

  • How much time do you have to spare?DIY is absolutely time consuming since you have to be the one doing everything. If your time is more expensive, you are better off letting others do it.

  • How much help do you have? If you have more friends and family at your disposal, the process can be easier for you.

  • How much knowledge and experience do you have? Moving requires certain skills and expertise, for instance, in packing and handling fragile items, antiques, breakables, etc. Will you be able to take adequate care of those special items? Again, do you have the right driving experience to help you navigate a truck on the highway?

Now you can make your decision. And if cost is a major priority, consider getting estimates from two or more companies and compare to the cost of DIY, plus the stress, to see what works for you.
